Dr.Haim Ginott once said “I've come to the frighteningconclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily moodthat makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make achild's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrumentof inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, itis my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalatedand a child humanized or de-humanized.When posedthe question of why I teach, the answer seems so simple to me. I teach becauseI enjoy working with youth in a way that will help them grow to beknowledgeable, empathetic, and effective adults. Unfortunately, many of my students come from ineffective or neglectful homes and a teacherand/or coach can be the only positive influence that a student has from day to day. To some, this can be an enormous responsibility but I am ready for the challenge and Iam constantly aware of that responsibility. Often times I am reminded of thisquote and it acts as a standard of how my interactions should be with my students . As educators,we have one of the most important roles in a child’s life. That role canbe positive or negative and I strive to make my role a positive one from startto finish.
